
Walk any cemetery section laid out before the First World War and the material choices are legible from thirty feet away. The marble tablets are sugary and blank, their inscriptions gone or nearly gone, while the granite beside them still holds crisp letters under a film of lichen. That difference is not craftsmanship. It is mineralogy, and it is the single most consequential thing decided when a family orders a marker, because the choice cannot be revisited without buying a second stone.
Granite is a hard igneous rock with interlocked quartz and feldspar crystals, and it resists acidic rain in a way that carbonate stones cannot. Fifty years in the ground rarely changes its shape. What does change is the surface: a polished face holds its mirror finish for a very long time on the vertical planes but dulls where water sits and where mowers throw grit, and the rough-sawn or pitched sides collect lichen and moss that etch faint shadows into the grain. Darker granites, the deep blacks and blues, show mineral bloom and hard-water spotting more visibly than gray. None of that threatens the stone.
The careful reader checks the stone by name, not by color. Quarry names such as Barre gray, Dakota mahogany or Impala black describe a specific deposit with a known grain and a known behavior, whereas a quote that says only "black granite" or "imported granite" tells you nothing about density, iron content, or whether the slab will rust-stain along a seam in a decade. Ask for the quarry designation in writing, ask to see a finished piece of the same stone that has been outdoors for a few years, and ask what the shop's warranty actually covers.
Marble is calcite, and calcite dissolves. Rainfall that is even mildly acidic takes microns off the surface every year, which is why nineteenth-century marble reads like a worn coin. Freeze and thaw compounds it. Water enters the open grain, expands as it turns to ice, and pops sugar-sized crystals off the face, so an inscription cut a quarter inch deep can go illegible in two or three generations in Minnesota while surviving far longer in a dry climate. Many northern cemeteries now restrict or refuse marble, limestone and sandstone outright in new sections, along with any upright thinner than a stated minimum, because the grounds crew inherits the maintenance forever.
Read the cemetery's written rules before you sign anything. They typically specify permitted materials, minimum thickness for an upright die, whether the base must be granite, and whether flush markers are required in a lawn-mow section. A monument dealer who works that cemetery weekly usually knows the rules, but the family holds the deed and the risk, so getting the regulations directly from the office costs nothing and prevents a rejected delivery.
Cast bronze markers age by chemistry rather than erosion. The alloy develops an oxide layer that protects the metal beneath, and after fifty years a bronze plaque that has never been touched will be dark brown to green, with raised letters polished bright by decades of mowing and hands. That is normal aging, not damage. What families notice more often is the streaking: rain carries copper salts off the plaque and stains the granite base green, permanently in porous stone and stubbornly in dense stone.
So check what is under the bronze. A bronze plaque set into a granite base with a lip and a slight pitch sheds water away from the face; one set flat into concrete traps it. Check the metal thickness quoted, whether the border is cast integral to the plate, and how the mounting hardware is specified, since threaded inserts anchored in granite outlast pins epoxied into concrete. Depth matters less than the stone's ability to keep a sharp arris on the cut edge. Sandblasted letters in granite, cut through a rubber stencil, typically go three-sixteenths to a quarter inch deep and hold their edges essentially forever, which is why lettering added later by a field crew is worth insisting be done to the same depth and font as the original. Bronze letters are cast, so they cannot wear away, only darken. Marble takes a beautiful cut and then gives it back to the weather. Ask to see the layout proof at full size before the shop cuts, and keep a photograph of the finished stone on the day it was set, because that is the reference anyone restoring it in forty years will want.
A quote should identify the stone by its quarry designation, such as Barre gray or Dakota mahogany, rather than by color alone. Two stones described as black granite can differ substantially in density and iron content.
